Sing a Song of Sixpence

Godalming Operatic Society is one of the leading Gilbert & Sullivan Societies in the south. Having returned from performing their last show “Utopia Limited” at the Waterford International Opera Festival in Ireland, where seven of the principal men as the King and Flowers of Progress (plus tambourines) won a special award, this exciting production is under the same Stage Director, Pat O’Connell, and the music and orchestra will once more be up to the usual high standard in the capable hands of Robin Wells, the Musical Director.

“Sing a Song of Sixpence” will include the premiere of a new one act operetta “A Frank Affair” which has been specially written for Godalming Operatic Society. Book and lyrics are by Ambrose Barber and Eric Thomson with the story derived from one of Chaucer’s medieval morality tales. Music is by Robin Wells, the Society’s Musical Director, and Sir Arthur Sullivan in equal measure. The first scene of “A Frank Affair” which is set in the 1950’s was performed at the Summer Concert in 2007 and the Society look forward to performing the full operetta this summer. The operetta begins at a summer drinks party in a Surrey garden, as Frank leaves to go to New York to finalise an important business deal, But is his firm in financial difficulties, and why is family friend Laurence making a play for Frank’s wife Honor? With a cast of thirty, this tuneful setting of a very contemporary story is full of fun.

The rest of the programme includes songs from shows and writers about the world of finance, business and money! performed by the chorus and soloists of Godalming Operatic Society. This will be light hearted and humorous show for a summer evening.
